ACLU: The ACLU has actively supported the struggle for lesbian and gay civil rights since the 1960s and in 1986, it established its national Lesbian Gay Bisexual Transgender Project.

Gamma Mu Foundation   The Gamma Mu Foundation was formed to endow financial grants to organizations and individuals, primarily in rural America, that make available direct assistance to people with HIV/AIDS along with conducting prevention and education. 

Gay and Lesbian Activists Alliance of Washington, DC: The nation's oldest continuously active gay and lesbian civil rights organization.

Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD): GLAAD is dedicated to promoting and ensuring fair, accurate and inclusive representation of people and events in the media as a means of eliminating homophobia and discrimination based on gender identity and sexual orientation.

Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund: The Victory Fund is the nation's largest LGBT political action committee and the only national organization dedicated to increasing the number of openly LGBT elected officials at all levels of government. Since 1991, the Victory Fund and its national donor network have helped hundreds of openly LGBT candidates win election to local, state and federal offices. 

GLSEN: The Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network, or GLSEN, is working to ensure safe and effective schools for all students.

Human Rights Campaign: Working for Lesbian, gay bisexual and transgender equal rights.

Lambda Legal: Lambda Legal is a national organization committed to achieving full recognition of the civil rights of lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, the transgendered, and people with HIV or AIDS through impact litigation, education, and public policy work.

Log Cabin Republicans: The nation's largest gay and lesbian Republican organization - founded to battle the nation's first anti-gay ballot measure - California's Proposition 6 in 1978.

National Black Justice Coalition: The National Black Justice Coalition, www.nbjc.org , is a civil rights organization dedicated to empowering Black lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Our mission is to end racism and homophobia. As America's only nationwide Black gay civil rights organization, we are the authoritative source on LGBT issues as they affect Black communities.

National Center for Lesbian Rights: NCLR is a national legal resource center with a primary commitment to advancing the rights and safety of lesbians and their families through a program of litigation, public policy advocacy, free legal advice and counseling, and public education. In addition, NCLR provides representation and resources to gay men, and bisexual and transgender individuals on key issues that also significantly advance lesbian rights.

National Directory of Lesbian and Gay Community Centers: LGBT Community Centers exists to support and enhance lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) community centers, which are engines of community organizing and liberation, and crucial to the health and strength of LGBT communities.

National Gay and Lesbian Task Force: National organization working for the civil rights of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered people, with the vision and commitment to building a powerful political movement.

National Stonewall Democrats: The National Stonewall Democrats is a grassroots network connecting LGBT Democratic activists with more than 90 chapters across the country. Stonewall is a grassroots force for social change within our movement and within the Democratic Party.

National Transgender Advocacy Coalition : Works for the advancement of and the attainment of full civil rights for all transgendered, intersexed and gender variant people in every aspect of society and actively opposes discriminatory acts by all means legally available.

National Youth Advocacy Coalition: Social justice organization that advocates for and with young people who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, or questioning (LGBTQ) in an effort to end discrimination against these youth and to ensure their physical and emotional well being.

SAGE: Incorporated by lesbian and gay activists and aging service professionals in 1978 as Senior Action in a Gay Environment, SAGE (now Services & Advocacy for GLBT Elders) is the world’s oldest and largest non-profit agency addressing the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender elders.

Servicemembers Legal Defense Network: SLDN is a national, non-profit legal services, watchdog and policy organization dedicated to ending discrimination against and harassment of military personnel affected by "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and related forms of intolerance.

Servicemembers United: Servicemembers United is a non-partisan and non-profit organization whose primary goals are 1) to engage in education and advocacy on issues affecting gay and lesbian troops and veterans; 2) to serve as an associational organization for the gay and lesbian military, veteran, and defense community; 3) to represent the voice of Iraq/Afghanistan-era gay and lesbian troops and veterans; and 4) to forward and inform public debate on the U.S. military’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy.

Local Organizations

We Are Family: Safe Space, a peer support group for LGBTQQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning and queer) youth is currently meeting every Tuesday from 7:00pm-8:30pm at Circular Congregational Church at 150 Meeting Street. Topics of discussion vary weekly based on input from the youth attending. 843.637.9379

PFLAG: Parents, Families and Friends of Lesbians and Gays. PFLAG meets in Charleston on the first Wednesday of the month. We are now meeting in the pastor's study at Circular Congregational Church, located in the main church building—150 Meeting Street in Charleston. All are welcome. CHAMP is a community building project in the Charleston area, dedicated to strengthening our community and supporting each other. The group is for young gay, bi, and questioning guys ages 18-30. Charleston Pride Festival Inc.:  Charleston Pride Festival was founded to reach out to all Charleston communities to promote equal rights of our citizens and serve as a catalyst for change in our LGBT communities.

The Charleston Social Club: The Charleston Social Club is an organization for lesbians and all women who are accepting of lesbians. Southern Boys: We are fun-loving, mostly-southern gay men who make the rounds to various cities and/or gay events.  We know our music and like our deejays.  It's our goal to make any event a fun one for ourselves and others. And while we know a good time when we have one, we also have organized events for, and contributed to, various GLBT charities.  Even though we are a predominantly gay group, we welcome anyone who enjoys fun and who respects and supports us for who we are.

Charleston Area Transgender Support: C.A.T.S. is an open support group for all members of the transgendered community in the coastal area of South Carolina. Meetings are normally held the second Saturday of each moth at MCC Charleston 7860 Dorchester Road in N Charleston. For more information email ChasAreaTSupport@aol.com.

Trident Knights:  Provides for the promotion, support and development of the Leather/Levi community through hospitality, camaraderie, social and educational issues which are viable to the community at large.

Lowcountry AIDS Services : A non-profit Social Service agency serving men, women, and children living with HIV/AIDS

Gay and Lesbian Medical Association : Members provide tremendous expertise and credibility in our policy advocacy efforts, especially dedicated to expand LGBT access to high-quality healthcare.

The Ryan White Clinic at MUSC The Medical University of South Carolina HIV/AIDS clinic was started in September 1991. Community agencies came together to write a grant that provided services for Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties with Ryan White Care Act Funding.  With support from the Medical University, this clinic was the first in the state to be devoted to providing HIV/AIDS care by Infectious Disease Specialists.

The Ryan White Program at Roper St Francis Healthcare:
To be eligible for services through the program, an enrollee must be HIV positive and meet federal income guidelines. People with or without health insurance may be eligible for the services we provide.
