5 Things to Know - 10/28/2025

1. Remember to Vote with Pride on November 4th!

Election Day is coming up fast, and we don't need to remind you that local elections matter.

Make sure you're prepared with this quick checklist:

  • Check to make sure you're registered to vote and you know your polling place here.

  • Look at your sample ballot, so you know what you'll be voting on.

  • Double check you've got your photo ID to show at check-in.

  • Get excited to be a model citizen!

2. SNAP Benefits on Hold

With the federal government shut down still in full effect, SCDSS reports that over 260,000 households in South Carolina may not receive critical food assistance from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) in November. Governor McMaster has activated the One SC Fund and directed the South Carolina State Guard (SCSG) to assist food banks statewide in response.

The LGBTQ+ community has a higher rate of food insecurity and a higher reliance on SNAP benefits than our straight counterparts, meaning this lack of assistance impacts us greatly.

During this time, we want to make sure our community is fed. Please utilize the SC Food Access Map should you need it. Many of the food pantries listed do not require verification of income or other qualifications.

If you do not need this resource, we ask that you consider a donation of any kind to help support your neighbors.

3. Rave with AFFA and The Drop In on Nov. 16th!

Join us on Sunday, November 16th bright and early for our pop-up event at Commonhouse Aleworks with The Drop In!

Our lovely partners at TDI have been working hard to throw a musical theatre dance party that'll have you belting out your favorite tunes and sweating out your inhibitions for a good cause.

Book a bike for $45 at 8 or 9:30AM, and donate what you can to secure your spot at the rave at 10:30AM.

Take a class, stay for brunch, or just come dance it out! Costumes are optional, of course, but highly encouraged.

4. Creepy QT Party Update

As always, when one of us calls for help, the LGBTQ+ community responds with vigor.

Last week, QT Camp came under attack by a prominent political figure regarding the Halloween party held on Saturday. AFFA, along with 20 other South Carolina groups, came out in public support of the free summer camp for LGBTQ+ kids.

The party was attended by happy children, their families, and over 30 safety marshals to ensure a good time.

This event goes to show: if you mess with one of us, you mess with all of us.

Check out the important work QT Camp does here.

5. Check Out Our New Website!

The new AFFA website is live!

After months of building, testing, and fine-tuning, we’re thrilled to share a refreshed online home designed with our community in mind. You’ll notice a more inclusive look, easier navigation, and a color palette that nods to AFFA’s history while embracing our future.

Take a look for yourself!
