Our Impact

At AFFA, our mission is to achieve, nurture, and defend equality and full acceptance for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ+) people across South Carolina. We work at every level—from local governments to schools, clinics, and faith communities—to create a state where LGBTQ+ individuals are safe, seen, and supported.

Our impact is made possible by deep partnerships, community-led programs, and a bold commitment to advocacy and education.

Advocating for Change at Every Level

We build lasting relationships with municipal leaders, legislators, healthcare providers, and business communities to advance LGBTQ+ protections and visibility. From advocating for nondiscrimination ordinances to hosting town halls and supporting inclusive policy, AFFA is a trusted voice for LGBTQ+ rights in the Lowcountry and beyond.

AFFA is a key resource and tireless advocate for the Lowcountry. Working with Executive Director Chase Glenn to pass nondiscrimination ordinances in Mount Pleasant was the highlight of my first year on Town Council.

Education That Leads to Action

We believe education is essential to achieving full acceptance. That’s why we offer a wide range of training and workshops focused on LGBTQ+ cultural competency, allyship, and inclusion. AFFA’s team works directly with schools, healthcare providers, public agencies, and workplaces to deliver accessible, customized learning experiences.

  • DEI trainings tailored for healthcare, law enforcement, schools, and workplaces

  • Policy reviews and inclusion audits

  • Speaker forums with community leaders, faith leaders, and subject matter experts

Workshops are offered on a sliding scale. Contact us to learn more or schedule a session.

Creating LGBTQ+ Visibility and Belonging

From powerful media campaigns to rapid community response, AFFA works to create a culture where LGBTQ+ people feel seen, valued, and protected.

  • In 2018, our “Transcend Gender” media campaign reached thousands with a message of trans inclusion and safety.

  • After a rainbow flag was burned in Charleston, AFFA responded with a public solidarity campaign—distributing over 200 new flags to community members.

“AFFA has worked as a constant ally and community partner with the Charleston Police Department to assist in bridging the gap between the LGBTQIA community and our law enforcement organization.”
— Chief Luther Reynolds, Charleston Police Department

Data-Driven Advocacy

AFFA partnered with the College of Charleston and the Medical University of South Carolina to lead the Tri-County LGBTQ Community Needs Assessment. Over 1,400 LGBTQ+ individuals in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester Counties participated—helping us understand community challenges and shape data-informed solutions across the region.

Investing in LGBTQ+ Youth & Community Support

Each year, AFFA distributes over $60,000 in small grants through our Small Grants Program, supporting LGBTQ+ youth-serving organizations across South Carolina, North Carolina, and Georgia. These grassroots grants fund leadership development, community programming, and long-term systems change.

In partnership with We Are Family, we also help administer the Trans Love Fund, which provides microgrants to transgender individuals for medical, legal, and emergency needs across South Carolina.
