5 Things to Know - 5/2/25
1. Celebrating Lesbian Visibility Week
Last week, April 21 - 27, was Lesbian Visibility Week, and we’re taking a moment to recognize the strength, joy, and leadership of South Carolina's lesbian community. Too often erased or sidelined, lesbians deserve not only visibility but celebration. Didn't celebrate enough last week? We recommend leaning into books such as The Lesbian South by Jaime Harker, Black. Queer. Southern. Women. by E. Patrick Johnson, or Drastic Dykes and Accidental Activists by La Shonda Mims. Knowing where we came from helps us see where we're going!
2. A Big Success: Out Together at Bar Polari
Thank you so much to Bar Polari and everyone who joined us at last weekend’s Out Together social! This event brought together a vibrant crowd of community members, supporters, and new friends. The atmosphere was electric and can we talk about the AFFA-gato Martinis?! A total hit. We engaged in countless meaningful conversations about the community-building work AFFA does, and it was so clear you all are ready for the next event. Stay tuned - our AFFA community is so special, and we can't wait to gather again!
3. Volunteer Spotlight - William B.
This week, we’re thrilled to introduce William, a clinical psychologist serving both Charleston and North Charleston. William first connected with AFFA through his research on LGBTQ+ health equity and his drive to turn that research into real-world action. As a cisgender, heterosexual white man, he’s intentional about his role as an ally, grounded in the belief that everyone deserves to live openly and without fear. When he's not advocating for equity, you’ll likely find him recharging at a live show—whether it’s a comedy set or a Metallica concert (an annual must for him!). Join us in thanking William for all he does for AFFA!
4. Mark Your Calendars! Park Circle Pride is Almost Here!
AFFA is proud to be part of Park Circle Pride's annual celebration, including hosting a few exciting events. Expect a week full of affirming get-togethers, great energy, and vibrant community presence. Stay tuned for our full event schedule and opportunities to join in! You can learn more here.
5. AFFA Around the State
Speaking of Pride festivities, we’re already gearing up for celebrations across the state—from Upstate Pride in June, to Famously Hot SC Pride in Columbia and our hometown celebration here at Charleston Pride this October. No matter where you are in South Carolina, Pride season is a powerful reminder of visibility, joy, and solidarity—and we can’t wait to show up and show out. Keep an eye out for opportunities to march with us in parades, volunteer at booths, and be part of this vibrant, affirming movement. Which Pride are you most excited about?
