5 Things to Know - 4/18/25
1. Join Us for “Out Together” at Bar Polari – April 26
We’re hosting a relaxed, come-as-you-are social mixer at Bar Polari on Saturday, April 26 from 6-10 p.m., and we’d love to see you there! Out Together is all about connecting with LGBTQ+ community members, allies, and supporters in a casual space. The first 50 guests will receive a free drink ticket, and our signature AFFA-gato Martini (with a mocktail version, of course) will be available, with a portion of proceeds going to AFFA. No speeches, no program - just good people and good energy. Drop in anytime during the evening!
2. AFFA Action Honors Two Legislative Heroes
Last week, the AFFA Action Team headed to the SC State House to present the Legislative Hero Award to two incredible allies: Senator Tameika Isaac Devine and Representative Heather Bauer. Both have consistently stood up for LGBTQ+ rights in South Carolina, using their platforms to push back against harmful legislation and speak out for equality. AFFA Action is proud to recognize their leadership and grateful for their continued advocacy.
3. Volunteer Spotlight - Max S.
Max has been a longtime supporter of AFFA, and we’re thrilled to highlight her in this week’s Volunteer Spotlight! She was an incredible help at this year’s gala—pitching in with setup, greeting guests, and making sure everything ran smoothly behind the scenes. Max brings heart, dedication, and a genuine passion for our mission, and we’re so grateful to have her as part of the AFFA family.
4. In Conversation with Colleen Condon
We're proud to share that AFFA Action board member Colleen Condon was recently featured on The Letterhack, where they spoke about their path to public service, the power of local leadership, and AFFA's ongoing commitment to LGBTQ+ advocacy in South Carolina. Watch the interview here.
5. H.3927 Heads to the Senate – Take Action Now
Last week, the South Carolina House passed H.3927, a sweeping anti-DEI bill that would ban diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across public schools, colleges, and state agencies. The bill is now in the Senate – and with just four weeks left in this half of the legislative session, your voice is urgently needed. No member of the public has spoken in favor of this bill at any hearing, but it continues to move forward. Click here to email your senator and urge them to vote NO on H.3927.
